The Santa Cruz Shredder Hack: Toss the Kief Screen
Basically, we don’t need to divide our weed. I buy the Santa Cruz Shredder Jumbo 4-piece matte black and toss the kief screen as soon as I get it. The screen never has flower put through it. Remove it first, and now the “kief catcher” becomes the flower catcher and basically functions as a handheld rolling tray. Even though I’m paying more for the 4-piece just to immediately make it a 3-piece, it’s worth it. The actual 3-piece is taller because the bottom is built to catch flower, not kief. But that’s exactly why I like the 4-piece better after removing its screen. The 4-piece kief catcher is shallow, so once the screen is gone, shredded flower falls directly into that shallow bottom piece. That shallow depth makes it way easier to finger the shredded flower and shovel it directly onto the paper while the paper is sitting along your finger. You can literally use the bottom of the grinder as your rolling tray. It’s easy enough that I can do it as a passenger in a car. And it still has adequate space for flower. On the Jumbo, that shallow bottom can hold around 5–6 king joints worth. So even though the actual 3-piece is cheaper and technically gives you more metal, the taller flower-catching bottom is less useful to me. Both grinders end up being 3 pieces anyway — mine just gets there by buying the 4-piece and tossing the screen. The built-in kief catcher, repurposed as the flower catcher, is honestly perfect. So I spend more, toss the screen, and I’m happy. I also enjoy the Large Santa Cruz Shredder. I have 4 Large shredders and only 1 Jumbo, same story with the screen. But now that I know what I know, if I could choose only one type, I’d have 5+ Jumbos.
